Blog Post: A Lifetime, enjoyable and professional Experience playing in the Turkish Airlines World Golf Cup.
What a week it has been! I’ve just wrapped up an unforgettable experience at the Turkish Airlines World Golf Cup, held in beautiful Antalya, Türkiye. Representing Cape Town and South Africa on a stage featuring champions from 75 different countries, I found myself relishing every moment,on and off the course.
Round 1 Recap:
The opening day was tough: rain-soaked fairways, challenging conditions, and playing off the longest tees (the black pro tees, with an extra 50 meters on many holes). Under such circumstances, shooting a nett 1 over par felt like a personal victory. I managed to outplay my four-ball teammates from Morocco, Egypt, and Germany, earning me a small but satisfying win. By the end of Day 1, I was comfortably in the top half of the field, with only a few points separating me from the top-15 contenders. This left me feeling optimistic about making a move on Day 2, especially with better weather predicted.

Round 2 and the Finale:
True to the forecast, the sun came out and so did my A-game. I shot a nett 2 under par (-2) from those same challenging back tees on a different course though. Once again, I bested my four-ball teammates, this time from the USA, UAE, and Sweden, keeping my unbeaten streak against my immediate competitors intact. Although I found myself battling some tough bunkers along the way, I finished the day in 17th place out of 120 players,an achievement I’m immensely proud of.
The margins were razor-thin: just three points stood between 10th and 20th place, which shows the level of talent and competitiveness in the field. By the end of the tournament, I finished in the top 30s overall. Considering the caliber of players, all country champions in their own right, I’m genuinely satisfied. It’s not often you get to test yourself against the best from every corner of the globe and still hold your own.
Personal Reflections:
Competing in such a high-level tournament brought back a rush of memories from my earlier days of sporting pursuits, some 20 to 30 years ago. The adrenaline, the focus, the camaraderie, it all felt like home. I’ll admit my body was this time not as accustomed to five consecutive days of intense physical and mental exertion as it once was, but I managed just fine. The entire journey was thoroughly enjoyable, challenging, and deeply rewarding.
A special mention goes out to my personal “caddy”, my wonderful traveling partner ( my wife) ,who was there every step of the way, offering support, encouragement, and good company. Next on the agenda: treating her to a few well-deserved days of relaxation and adventure in Istanbul.

Gratitude and Future Plans:
I owe a huge thank you to Turkish Airlines, the sponsors, Gloria Hotels, Ruck and Maul and the event organizers for putting together such a world-class tournament. The spirit of competition was balanced beautifully with camaraderie and friendship. We were fierce competitors on the course but shared laughs and stories off it.
I’m also honored to be a Turkish Airlines ambassador for the South African region. This role is a privilege I don’t take lightly, and I look forward to representing them with pride.
As I return home, I carry with me new lessons learned, a sharper golfing skillset, and a renewed zest for the game amd life. I’m already looking forward to playing with my “social but competitive” golfing buddies back home. They’d better watch out, my game has reached a new level!
Finally, a big thank you to everyone who supported me throughout this journey. Your messages of encouragement and daily check-ins meant more than you know. Here’s to more fairways hit, more putts drained, and more wonderful life and golfing adventures ahead.
Until next time,
Khalid
