My decision to embark on a sabbatical was not merely an escape from the rigors of corporate life but a conscious choice to embrace a new chapter. One defined by family, friends, stepping back, and personal growth. After four decades of relentless work and academic pursuits, it was time to pause. To savor the simple pleasures of life, and to reconnect with those who matter most. It has also given me the time to play some golf and hit the road on my bike, at times cycling 150 kms a week.
Family and personal growth
From the onset of this hiatus, my family became my anchor. Providing unwavering support and encouragement as I navigated through uncharted waters. My children are an immense source of pride and joy. Allow me to brag as a proud father.
My eldest daughter has become a pillar in the legal community. She is a qualified attorney with an astute mind that makes the entire family, and certainly the legal fraternity, proud.
Witnessing my son’s achievements, having graduated at Unversity, and representing SA on the indoor and outdoor hockey field filled me with pride. He has won the SA men’s indoor hockey “rising star of the year” award for 2023, an opportunity to support his endeavours at the 2024 All Africa and Nations cup beckoned.
My youngest daughter is currently in her final year of studying towards a BSc-Biochemistry and Genetics. She is well on her way to a successful career and makes us all proud of how she handles her university routine.
Sabbatical life
A sabbatical truly whirls with activity—filled with laughter, adventure, and moments of quiet reflection. From lazy days by the pool with my wife, swimming and relaxing to exhilarating cycling excursions. Each experience was a reminder of the beauty of life’s journey and the importance of cherishing every moment.
Amidst the leisurely pursuits, I remained connected with my network, engaging in meaningful conversations with friends, family, and business associates. These interactions enriched my perspective, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect that transcended professional boundaries.
A highlight has undoubtedly been our family vacation in Thailand earlier this year. A rare opportunity to bond amidst the backdrop of exotic landscapes and cultural richness. As we explored new horizons together, I was reminded of the importance of shared experiences and the profound impact of family bonds. I found myself contemplating the road ahead—reinvigorated and ready to embrace the challenges that lay ahead. As I look at the world of corporate governance and business leadership, I do so with a renewed sense of purpose and a profound appreciation for life’s blessings. My journey so far has taught me that change is inevitable, but it is how we navigate through it that defines us. I hope that my experiences serve as a source of inspiration for aspiring leaders worldwide. For in the pursuit of excellence lies the true essence of leadership. A journey marked not by the destination but by the lessons learned along the way.
